In 2012 the team behind West Dean Gardens, Jim Buckland and Sarah Wain, have won three awards for their work over the past 25 years in the restoration of West Dean Gardens.   West Dean College sits in the middle of the Gardens and uses this landscape as a rich resource for its arts, craft and photography courses.

A Sussex Sketchbook – drawing course, 3–6 May

Learn to make the best of your sketchbook for recording observations and developing visual ideas. Practical help is given on location, in the house and gardens of West Dean. Back in the studio, exercises in perspective and composition, with advice on media, will help provide structure to developing your interpretive skills. With Paul Cox.

The spring landscape – painting outdoors in oils, 6–10 May
