Chinese student uses art to question her country's abortion policy

Qiwen Ke, an international student from China soon to graduate with an MA in 'Applied Imagination' from Central St Martins art school in London, has created a provocative installation centring on a model of an unborn child enveloped in ice. This sculpture, which she says draws on the devastating impact of the one-child policy on the mother-child relationship in her homeland, in her words represents ‘the cold manner in which our society views the foetus’ and is designed ‘to make people think again’ about abortion. In China, many women have been forced to have abortions as the government has pursued its 'one-child' policy.
