The 2014 Biennial will take a bold new form as three curators from outside the Museum – Stuart Comer (Chief Curator of Media and Performance Art at MoMA), Anthony Elms (Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia), and Michelle Grabner (artist and Professor in the Painting and Drawing Department at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago) – each oversee one floor, representing a range of geographic vantages and curatorial methodologies. Together, the 103 participants offer a broad and diverse take on contemporary art in the United States.

A full programme of events includes a series of theatrical performances by My Barbarian, a collective consisting of Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon, and Alexandro Segade, who will perform The Mother and Other Plays. This live adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s The Mother (first performed in 1932), includes musical numbers and improvised content, and also maintains the Brechtian concept of the Lehrstück, or learning-play, by inviting audience members to participate in select scenes.

Performances are free with Museum admission, but tickets are required. Tickets are available on the day of the performance on a first-come first-served basis, subject to availability. Please inquire at the admissions desk when you arrive. All ticket holders must be in the ticket holders’ line no later than 15 minutes prior to the performance start time, or the ticket(s) will be forfeited. No refunds will be given
