Design Council Chief to be honoured at University Ceremony

John Mathers, CEO of the Design Council

John Mathers, CEO of the Design Council, will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate today, Thursday 15 January, at a Birmingham City University graduation ceremony.

With over 30 years’ experience in the brand and design industry, John has successfully led a number of marketing, brand and design consultancies in the UK and internationally.

John joined the Design Council in 2012 following an International CEO role at the Holmes & Marchant group. Prior to this John was previously at the helm of the Brand Union for ten years (formerly Enterprise IG), WPP’s flagship brand design agency, as well as having secured a number of high-profile roles within  the fast-moving consumer goods and retail industry, including head of brand at Safeway.

John Mathers, Design Council CEO said:
I’m extremely proud to have received this award both from a personal perspective and a recognition of the ever increasing role that design is playing in keeping Britain at the forefront of the ‘ideas’ economy. I’m also particularly pleased to be continuing my relationship with the city of Birmingham where my career started.

Over the last ten years, John has been actively committed to the development of the design industry, serving as President of the Design Business Association, as well as being involved in various ways with the Design Council and the broader design community.

John will receive his award at a Birmingham City University graduation ceremony today, Thursday 15 January.
