Tom Levy ‘Visual Meditations’

Saturday 1 August 2015, 6p.m.–9p.m.

On Saturday 1 August, British artist Tom Levy is holding a solo exhibition called ‘Visual Meditations’.With 40 pieces on display, each is painted onto glass, creating an interesting experience that explores the links between modern day scientific research and ancient spiritual belief.

‘Visual Meditations’ is Tom’s mind map. Throughout the space guests can expect to be taken on multiple journeys. As the audience views one piece of art, moving around the room will then completely change the perspective and tell a different story. Within the space, the pieces are displayed on plinths to ensure the most dramatic effect.

The images depicted are references to nature, spirituality, the cosmos and the large hadron collider. Tom’s inspiration for this comes from the fact that current research into atomic particles backs up some ancient theories of the universe and existence given by meditation masters in Hindu and Buddhist philosophies.

The artist says:

I purposely wanted my paintings to link together. This was to represent the fact that everything and everyone is connected in life; by atoms and other forces which are more fluid and difficult to explain. Thoughts, dreams, feelings of love and hate; the idea of the mind and soul being matter, is something which one cannot describe but experience. For me, meditation is a tool which can be used to do this, as is painting. I have explored the links between modern day scientific research and spiritual belief to discover what makes us human; that being curiosity.
