Turner Contemporary opens at Margate

— May 2011

Turner Contemporary, Margate © Richard Bryant

We are very excited about Britain's latest public art gallery. Margate is a typical example of a British seaside town that has had to reinvent itself as cheap flights and a desire for foreign holidays has depleted its traditional visitors. The original home of Tracey Emin, and once frequently visited by JMW Turner, whose mistress lived there, Margate is now home to a new gallery. David Chipperfield’s modernist creation won’t appeal to all tastes but is likely to draw in a crowd of the curious as well as of the serious art lovers. Read about the opening and the first exhibition in this issue: see 'Turner Comes to Town' and 'Revealed: Turner Contemporary Opens'.
