Students love the opportunities presented by the Masterclasses

Dulwich Picture Gallery is working with NADFAS (National Association for the Decorative and Fine Art Societies)London Young Arts to offer a rare opportunity for 16–18 year olds who are passionate about art.  In a completely free-of-charge intensive three-day workshop in October half-term, selected young people will develop their skills drawing from life and create work for a public exhibition at Canvas and Cream Art Gallery, Gipsy Hill.

The Masterclass gives an insight into what art school studies could entail as well as overseeing the creation of exhibition-worthy pieces.  Completely free of charge to the participants this course offers students the chance to display their work, probably for the first time, in a bustling local space. This is the first year the Gallery has included the extra element of a public exhibition. This display will add to the participants’ portfolio of achievements.

The course is particularly beneficial to those thinking of applying to art college, as it gives an opportunity to greatly improve personal portfolios, offers advice from a professional artist and creative feedback from peers.

Participants from previous years have gone on to apply for art scholarships.  Overall students’ confidence in their work developed significantly.

A participant from last year’s Masterclass said:

What I enjoyed most about the course was the intensity that came with working all day for three days.  The continuity of the Masterclass allowed us to be at our height of creativity and to get fully immersed in our art work.

Taking inspiration from the Gallery’s permanent collection, 15 participants will hone their observational skills by drawing directly from the model and experimenting with different media.  At the end of the course selected finished work will be displayed in the Sackler Centre at Dulwich Picture Gallery for friends and family to view before being exhibited Canvas and Cream Art Gallery, Gipsy Hill, SE23 3HF from 22 November – 2 December 2012.
