At a news conference this week, the young curator of the Bromer Art Collection (BAC), Christian Herren (b. 1992), made his first appearance in front of the media. With great poise and confidence, the man who is probably Switzerland´s youngest museum curator presented the ideas and the objectives he aims to realize in the years ahead. He is driven by an infectious passion for art, which he wants to share with a broad audience through unconventional exhibitions and events.

The motif of the mountain stands at the centre of the BAC´s collecting and exhibiting activities - with a view to art historical investigation and reappraisal, but also as a platform and guiding theme for young artists. Future exhibitions as well as the collection shall be shaped and enriched by the curator´s sure eye for emerging talents and wide-ranging artistic and art historical knowledge, which leave much room for bringing to fruition personal thoughts and visions. Herren explained:

I find it extremely exciting to show in what way the classic motif of the mountain provides art with an inexhaustible source of inspiration, which to this day has not lost its significance and relevance. The Bromer Art Collection is a contemporary, cosmopolitan museum, anchored in Swiss culture and tradition, and which to date did not exist in this form.

A promising partnership

The initiator and owner of the Bromer Art Collection, entrepreneur René Brogli, is thrilled to have brought on board the young talent from Bern, Christian Herren, as a curator for his museum. ‘Christian is talented and he brings to the project knowledge, enthusiasm, and – notwithstanding his young age – a highly precise notion as to how to turn his ideas into reality. I like tha’, said René Brogli, explaining his decision to entrust Christian Herren with the direction of the BAC.

The young curator displays a clear flair for art; in parallel to his art history studies in Basel and in Bern, he has already mounted numerous widely and well regarded art projects, e.g. at his gallery ‘Eletto’ in Bern. With the Bromer Art Collection, Christian Herren wants to establish a new viewpoint and critical dialogue between tradition and modernity, through which to showcase young artists as well as various art forms such as photography, video, installations, assemblages, and performances. Christian Herren pulls the strings, René Brogli provides the platform.

Urban architecture nestling in a typically Swiss landscape

The building complex and its surrounding park, designed by Munich-based architect Dr Marie Aigner in collaboration with René Brogli (Bromer Architects), is set amongst picturesque farmhouses and lime trees. Next to an exhibition space of around 1500 square metres on three floors, the museum also offers state-of-the-art storage and a versatile multimedia room. The infrastructures meet international standards and contemporary requirements. The greatest attention is given to lighting, climatic conditions, and air purity: ultraviolet light-absorbing museum glass makes it possible to flood the building with light without exposing exhibits to potential damage. A spacious museum store houses the region´s sole TASCHEN representation, and the museum´s own restaurant offers creative and market-fresh cuisine under the direction of Gault Millau distinguished chef Roc Greisler.
