Karolina Glusiec wins Jerwood Drawing Prize 2012

Karolina Glusiec has been awarded first prize in the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2012 for her hand drawn animation Velocity.  A clip of the winning drawing, a graphite on paper animation, can be viewed at https://vimeo.com/45310613  

Karolina Glusiec was born in Poland, graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2012 and is now based in London.  Karolina commented that ‘for me, drawing is the most sincere way of communicating and the most honest representation of ones thoughts and feelings’.  The Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK.  Judged by an independent panel of selectors, the prize aims to explore and celebrate the diversity, excellence and range of current drawing practice in the UK.  

The prize fund for 2012 has been increased by over 50% to £17,000 and was shared between the winner and four others.  Bada Song was awarded second prize; two student winners were announced as Katie Aggett and Min Kim; a Highly Commended award was given to Jane Dixon.  

2,800 works of art by 1,400 artists were submitted; the panel of selectors short-listed 78 works by 74 artists to form a travelling exhibition that is currently on show until 6 January 2013 at the Jerwood Gallery, Hastings.  The exhibition travels to mac Birmingham from 12 January to 3 March 2013; and then to The Gallery at the Arts University College at Bournemouth from 22 March to 26 April 2013.
