Game, set, catch… 3D tennis pavement art rallies Wimbledon fans in the capital

A spectator enjoys the 3D pavement art by 3D Joe and Max

To celebrate the launch of Land Securities’ Great British Summer tennis screenings, Londoners are invited to return a serve with 3D pavement art display – 19 and 20 June only.

As excitement for Wimbledon mounts, Londoners are invited to ace their topspin and backhand at a new 3D art installation in Cardinal Place, Victoria.

The bespoke 6m x 5m pavement art, created by ‘3D Joe and Max’, gives members of the public the chance to return a serve as a tennis ball appears to smash through a TV screen, straight from the action on Centre Court.

Shoppers, local office workers, residents and tourists alike are invited to be part in the crosscourt art and encouraged to share photographs of their attempt to return (or run away from!) the player’s serve using the hashtag #GreatBritSummer.

The art commission brings all the sporting spectacle of SW19 to SW1 for two days (19 and 20 June, Cardinal Walk), but it doesn’t stop there. What you see is what you get, as the installation will be replicated in real life as Land Securities launches its Great British Summer Wimbledon screenings, which will take place at Cardinal Place and three other sites across the capital from next Monday (23 June).

Each destination is serving up free screenings of the world-famous tennis championships on screens installed in specially customized retro caravans, while the audience gets comfortable in deckchairs & giant outdoor cushions. This year two new venues will join Great British Summer regulars Cardinal Place in Victoria (roof garden) and New Street Square in Holborn, as the City’s premiere roof terrace at One New Change and Wapping’s Thomas More Square also get set to host screenings.

Joe Hill, the artist behind the installation, commented:

Nothing sums up the Great British Summer like Wimbledon – whether it’s rallying behind our favourite players or keeping an obsessive eye on the weather. And for two weeks of the year, we all become tennis experts so we thought we’d give armchair enthusiasts the chance to be part of the action and get the chance to return a serve as the ball comes smashing out of the screen!

Ben Ridgwell Portfolio Director at Land Securities comments:

We are delighted to bring the Great British Summer screenings back to the capital especially following last year’s phenomenal success, so we hope this 3D interactive art gets Londoners as excited about Wimbledon as we are. Each Great British Summer site is home to a great range of food and drink options and audiences at One New Change can even enjoy service to their deckchair, so we can’t think of a better way to enjoy the tennis!
