A chance to see and buy master drawings in New York

— January 2015

Thomas Gainsborough, Travellers Passing through a Village 219x308mm pencil black chalk watercolor white lead on buff paper (Dealer: Stephen Ongpin)

Master Drawings in New York (MDNY) is now open to the public until Saturday 31 January. It is timed to coincide with New York’s major January art-buying events, including the Old Master auctions and The Winter Antiques Show.  More than 30 top dealers from the US as well as the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy are showing important pencil, pen and ink and chalk and charcoal drawings, as well as oil on paper sketches and watercolours in a 15-block stretch of the Upper East Side’s ‘Gold Coast’ in New York.

Margot Gordon co-founded the New York edition of MDNY in 2006 with London drawings specialist Crispian Riley-Smith.  She says:
It’s never been more apparent that drawings, which represent the first creative spark of an artist’s vision, represent a unique collecting opportunity both in terms of quality and value.  Even new collectors have access to drawings by iconic artists working in the 16th through the 20th centuries.

She adds:
For those interested in learning more about the quality and range of drawings on offer, Master Drawings in New York allows visitors the chance to see important artworks from the most respected dealers.  Each dealer creates his own exhibition in his own or rented spaces on or adjacent to Madison Avenue, making visits to several galleries at a time a most worthwhile experience.

Open to the public until Saturday January 31, 11a.m. to 6p.m.
