Installation shot of Joana Vasconcelos' Material Girl (2015) at Phillips, London

'Material World' presents over 40 works by Joana Vasconcelos, whose work has been shown at the Venice Biennale (2005) and the Palace of Versaille (2012).

If you like art that is bold, imaginative colourful, thought provoking and executed with admirable skill, then you should head to Phillips, the London auction house, at 30 Berkeley Square, London. Vasconcelos' work occupies two floors and does not disappoint. While Material Girl (2015) takes up a gallery the size of a large ballroom, Merlin (2015) – a cat - and Stella (2015) – a salamander, might fit in even the most modest home. And no child of any age could resist Vasconcelos' 'wendy house' made almost entirely of Murano glass. On now until 28 August and not to be missed.

There are two floors of magical works, most of which involve the use of crochet - yes, that's right, crochet. There are ceramic creatures covered in crochet, and it's really difficult to see how they have been done. The crochet is 'skin tight' to the ceramic and there must be joins somewhere but where...??? Material Girl (see picture) involves not only a lot of crochet but also air. A pump keeps it full and the air inside helps keep the whole thing in place, like a gigantic balloon. A crocheted balloon.... Other works involve mirrors, ceramics, light bulbs, and a lot of sparkle.

In this show the 'ordinary' is made extraordinary, a remarkable artistic vision which poses the question 'is anything really "ordinary" or do we just not truly see things that are around us?'.

As an added extra, on the first floor there is 'Buzzed', an interesting exhibition of work by Phillips' staff.
