Shopopolis art installation at Westfield shopping complex, London

— July 2011

Associated media

Westfield shopping complex, London

Since May 2011, a combined team of artists who are based in the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom have been researching how ‘places of retail’, from Arab souks and British street markets to the Dubai Mall and Westfield London, serve as alternative communal spaces.   This summer, the artists – Khalid Mezaina, Karima al Shomely and a London-based collective of artists and architects called public works – will be ‘in residence’ in Westfield London.  Engaging with shoppers and retailers, the artists aim to collect personal narratives and document micro-communities and invisible 'networks' that exist in Westfield London that will culminate in an art installation for The Village’s main display window from 17th to 24th July. A film documentation along with a series of short animations of the stories that inspired the products at Westfield London, will be screened for the public to view.
